Author and photographer Raymond Bial makes images on assignment
for books, magazines, advertising, and stock photography. His books
have been published by Houghton Mifflin, Scholastic, Walker &
Company, Marshall Cavendish, Midwest Traditions, the University
of Illinois Press, and other fine publishers. His work has also
been used by book publisher ranging from National Geographic to
MacGraw-Hill, advertising agencies such as Leo Burnett, and media
such as PBS.
He is a highly-skilled photographer who works with ease both in
color and in black and white. Working primarily with medium-format
and 35mm equipment, he is best known for his versatility in portraiture,
landscapes, and still lifes, and his sensitivity toward his subjects.
He has published over eighty critically-acclaimed, award-winning
books of photographs for children and adults. His photoessays for
children include Corn
Belt Harvest, County
Fair, Amish
Home, Frontier
Home, Shaker
Home, The
Underground Railroad, Portrait
of a Farm Family, With
Needle and Thread: A Book About Quilts, Cajun
Home, Mist
Over the Mountains: Appalachia and Its People, The
Strength of These Arms: Life in the Slave Quarters, Where
Lincoln Walked, A
Handful of Dirt, Ghost
Towns of the American West, Tenement:
Immigrant Life on the Lower East Side, and Where
Washington Walked.
Although his children’s books are intended as middle readers,
they are popular “crossover books” that appeal to younger
children and adults as well. His books are especially suitable for
parents, grandparents, teachers, and librarians to share with children.
As with his other work, the artist’s deep feeling for his
subjects is evident in these books of photographs.
