Collections of Photographs

I did not fully appreciate the plains and their vast skies until I'd left the midwest. On every visit home, I noted how many of the traditional artifacts were disappearing from the landscape. I began to document those aspects of the region that had mattered to me as a child. I was concerned with evoking the changing moods of the land and with presenting that which is truly lovely, yet often overlooked by others.                                                                                   Raymond Bial

Ivesdale : A Photographic Essay

Hardcover, Urbana, Ill.: Champaign County Historical Archives, 1982.

"My first book, Ivesdale, documented a small farm town during the harvest season. Yet I would consider this book to be a personal essay as well, because of my deep feeling toward the subject."

Stopping by : Portraits from Small Towns (Visions of Illinois)

Hardcover, Champaign, Ill.: University of Illinois Press, 1988.

"To my mind, this book not only drew attention to the many losses of the region, but also evoked the essential humanity of the people presented in the photographs. I believe that the highest objective of photography should be to continually remind us to value one another, and I suppose this theme has pervaded all my work."
